Julius Smith Added To Coaching Staff

Binghamton announced the hiring of former University of the District of Columbia (Division II) head coach Julius Smith, completing Mark Macon’s staff for the 2010-11 season. Smith is a DC native and has 25 years of college coaching experience.

“We are pleased to add Julius Smith to our coaching staff,” interim athletics director Jim Norris said in a press release.

“Julius has a wealth of experience and will be a nice addition to the solid staff we’ve formed this summer. Everyone on the search committee was impressed with Julius and confident he will be an outstanding teacher/coach for our program.”

Tiki Mayben Sentenced to Probation

Former Binghamton star Tiki Mayben was sentenced to five years of probation for his role in facilitating a drug deal in his hometown of Troy, NY. Mayben was able to avoid jail time do to his lack of a criminal record and credit for time-served when he was arrested last June. Mayben plead guilty in May to criminal sale of a controlled substance, a fifth-degree felony.

“I got a call from someone who wanted an 8-ball (an eighth of a gram of powder cocaine) and I said I would make a call to someone I knew,” Mayben told Judge Andrew Ceresia. “I then called the person back and met him on King Street and my friend made the deal.”

D.J. Rivera Stolen Debit Card Case To Go To Trial

Former Binghamton star D.J. Rivera appeared in Broome County Court to reaffirm his non-guility plea on felony and misdemeanor charges that he stole another BU student’s debit card to buy a TV at the Vestal Walmart. No trial date has been set.

Rivera was charged on June 1st with grand and petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. According to the Kaye Report, teammate Chretien Lukusa alerted the victim about the theft.

Rivera and Lukusa also identified to police fellow teammates Paul Corsby, Malik Alvin, and Corey Chandler in Walmart security footage putting items in a shopping cart. Rivera denied that his teammates had any knowledge that the debit card was stolen. Police officers told Rivera that they believed he was covering for his teammates.

Wright, Sutton, and Jabbi Returning for 2010-11 Season

America East First Teamer Greer Wright is returning to Binghamton for the 2010-11 season. Close to transferring to the Cincinnati of the Big East, Wright decided to stay at Binghamton because of academics.

“At Cincinnati, I wouldn’t be able to graduate on time, or I would have had to change my major, which I really didn’t want to do,” Wright told the Press & Sun Bulletin.

Returning with him are sophomore Kyrie Sutton and Mahamoud Jabbi. Sutton was rumored to have transferred to Rider. Jabbi, who has one year of eligibility remaining, will return for a graduate year.

Ron Brown Hired As Assisstant Coach

Binghamton announced the hiring of former Fairleigh Dickinson assistant Ron Brown. Brown was the associate head coach at FDU last season and has 20 years of college coaching experience. His career as an assistant includes stops at LIU (1998-02), Western Kentucky (1997-8), and West Virginia (1985-93). He also head coach for Florida A&M (1993- 6) and recruited former NBA player Jerome James.

“We are very excited to get a person with Ron’s experience and credentials,” Interim Athletic Director Jim Norris said. “Everyone on the search committe was very impressed with Ron in a variety of areas, including his commitment to educating young people and his passion for basketball. We’ve been told he’s a first-class person, a solid family man and a real people-person. We think he’ll be a great fit for our program.”

Interim Head Coach Mark Macon told the Press & Sun Bulletin that Brown’s first duty would be to “hit the [recruiting] trail. We need players.”

Binghamton Releases Non-Conference Schedule

Binghamton released the men’s basketball team’s non-conference schedule for the 2010-11 season. The schedule features home games against Atlantic 10 member St. Bonaventure, NCAA Cinderella Cornell, and former America East-member Hofstra. The Bearcats will also play in New York City on December 11th at Manhattan and play Marshall (Conference USA) in a return game.

KJ Brown Gives Verbal Commitment

KJ Brown has given a verbal commitment to play basketball for Binghamton next season. Brown, a 6’1, 180-lb point guard attending West Point Prep (NJ),de-commited from Army after head coach Jim Crews was fired. Brown also had offers from Lehigh, Lafayette, and Liberty before originally choosing Army.
